The 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event kicked off on Monday with the first of four Day 1 starts. Greg Raymer was on hand to give the customary “shuffle up and deal” command and play was underway.

Unfortunately for Raymer, his Main Event run would be the shortest of his poker career as he was knocked out in the first level. He lasted less than 90 minutes. Other players that were on hand during Day 1a were Michael Mizrachi, Billy Baxter, Jimmy Fricke, Chino Rheem, T.J. Cloutier, David Allen Grier, Ray Romano, and 2003 Champion Chris Moneymaker.

1,125 players turned out for Day 1a and by the end of the day, Michael Mizrachi was 2nd in chips with over 142,000. Mizrachi still has a shot at Player of the Year, but only if he can win the Main Event. Chris Moneymaker, Beth Shak, Dutch Boyd, Tiffany Michelle, and Lacey Jones were among the players that moved onto Day 2a play.

Day 1b kicked off on Tuesday with a crowd of 1,489 players looking to work their way to Day 2b play. Liv Boeree, Phil Galfond, Dan Harrington, Robert Williamson III, Annette Obrestad, Barbara Enright, Erica Schoenberg, and Erick Lindgren was among the players in the Day 1b field. Among the players that made Day 2a play from Day 1b were Phil Laak, Brandon Cantu, Matt Stout, James Dempsey, Jason DeWitt, and Phil Galfond. DeWitt and Galfond finished among the chip leaders and both had over 140k.

Day 1c was a much more upbeat affair as this day saw the largest crowd out of the four days. Many of the big names decided to play on this day to avoid being shut out. Phil Hellmuth made his customary entrance to the Main Event heralded by hot women and rappers. Hellmuth was dressed as a UFC fighter and announced by UFC ring announcer and amateur poker player Bruce Buffer.

Others in the Day 1c field were Daniel Negreanu, Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth was not able to make it through the day and was not able to extend his WSOP Main Event cash streak to three years in a row.

Johnny Chan finished the day 2nd in chips with 163,700. Lauren Kling held 149,650 and was the high woman so far through three Day 1’s. Robert Mizrachi was also among the chip leaders, making this yet another event both Mizrachi brothers were in contention.

Day 1d kicked off on Thursday with future NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith kicking off the event. The entire Brunson family played on this day with Doyle, Pam, and Todd all battling it out. Chris Ferguson, Vanessa Rousso, Barry Greenstein, Jennifer Harman, Scott Montgomery, Andy Bloch, Phil Ivey, Shannon Elizabeth, Josh Arieh, and Archie Karas were among those in the field. Jack Ury was also in the field. He is still going strong at 97 and actually finished the day with 39,000 in chips.

The final numbers for the Main Event were revealed on Day 1d. 7,319 players turned out for the Main Event, making it the 2nd largest Main Event in history. 747 players will cash in this event, and the eventual winner will take home $8,944,138. Several media members also determined that Harrah’s pocketed $4,391,400 from the prize pool, or the equivalent to finishing 3rd place in the Main Event this year.

By the end of Day 1d, several big names were at the top of the leaderboard. Steve Billirakis was the chip leader with 187,150. Archie Karas finished with 137,775, David Benyamine with 133,600, and Vanessa Rousso finished with over 111,000 in chips.

Day 1a and 1c combined to form Day 2a that kicked off on Friday. Day 1b and 1d will form Day 2b which will be played Saturday. There is still quite a ways before we reach the money in this event, much less the final table. Stay tuned as we bring you recaps from all of the action at the WSOP Main Event.

2010 WSOP Main Event End of Day 5 Equities

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I have a lot to catch up on but Im short on time, Ive got to force myself to get some rest. I think my over-doing it has finally caught up with me!! Ive been feeling pretty under the weather for over a week now. It became worse after a cold kicked around my immune system and Ive just kind of shut down, its my fault though, I never take a breath and I know better, ugh! Ive paid for it this week!!! Ive been at the doctors/hospital every single day and I go back in tomorrow and Friday as well, fun fun!! I havent got all the results yet, but I think Im not going to have to have a minimum of 2 procedures within the next few weeks. I knew I was going to have to have one this week, but the added one isnt thrilling me.

I hate the hospital for so many reasons, I just cant stand being there, its completely nerve racking for me. I can never sleep, half the staff has no idea what is going on, Im usually in pain/discomfort, waiting on results is agonizing torture, just being there reminds me Im sick, and who could ever have good memories of a hospital?? Dont get me wrong, I love the volunteer work I do in them, its just when Im there for me, I have too much silent time to think about things…and I usually avoid that circumstance at all costs! Fortunately, I have found a tiny remedy to my fatal flaw, my IPad!!!

I dont take my laptop places since its something bigger to keep up with, but my IPad honestly fits in my purse, I love it!! So I can either type up notes/emails, listen to music, watch shows, or……READ!! I havent read a book in probably 4+ years, I just cant ever find the time and its not at the top of my hobbies list, but I swear this IPad has changed that. I downloaded about 100+ free books on there, mostly classics, but figured Id mix it up a bit since Ill be stuck in the hospital and/or recouping for a bit and bought the the start of the Sookie Stackhouse novel series thingy…which True Blood is based off of. Now this is huge for me, Ive rarely read a book (outside of school) that wasnt a classic….in my LIFE! I had no idea the show was based on a novel series, but I adore the show and figured: well what better time to "force" myself to read something different?!? So far the book hasnt disappointed, which is a pleasant surprise. Ive been enjoying it so much that I looked more into the series, as a whole I found out that its like a 93490234092340 book collection, so we will see if I eventually make it through them all!! Speaking of which, I think its about time to head to bed and maybe read a little before my long day tomorrow!! Im excited to read…weird!!! Im still in a state of shock!! haha So out of character for me, hrmmm…..does this mean Im getting OLD?!?!

Well since I havent been able to do much lately Ill include some goodies from a little photo shoot I did on my "Mer’s not feeling well flowers"!! Some pictures are better than none right?!?!

So I’m a bit worn out on poker from playing so much in the wsop so figured I’d talk about something else for a change…ice hockey.

I’m from Chicago and have become a big blackhawks fan in the last few years. While growing up no one in my family really watched hockey. Also, without HDTV or a big screen TV hockey was just difficult to watch on TV and tough to follow the puck and the action. In the last few years though I’ve become hooked and it’s quickly become my favorite sport to watch. Of course it helps that it’s the one good Chicago sports team out there these days (OK I’m partially a bandwagon fan).

Here’s what I think are the 4 best things about hockey

4.) The anticipation / build up followed by a breakthrough

It’s difficult to explain but perhaps an example will help. 3 years ago a couple friends and I went to my very first blackhawk’s game as one of my friend’s lived right near the United Center and well it was something to do. We bought tickets for $10 in the upperdeck. Hardly anyone was there (so I wasn’t a total bandwagon fan) and we could move down to the front row of the upperdeck and had a great view of the action. The hawks went the whole game without scoring and in the final minute they trailed 0-1 so they pulled their goalie and the other team got a penalty so they had a 6-4 situation. The hawks still couldn’t score, but with about 20 seconds left to go in the game the other team got another penalty to make it a 6-3. The blackhawks were just teeing off taking shot after shot and finally with 1.5 seconds left to go in the game they scored their first goal to tie it up. They quickly won it in overtime and I was hooked. That last minute was just a great buildup to the goal as the crowd gets more and more into it and excited with the goalie being pulled, two penalties, and every near miss, until when that goal is finally scored it’s one of the best moments in sports.

3.) There’s no diving in hockey

I’ve heard a few people complaining about diving going on in the world cup and I would have to agree it just greatly cheapens the sport. While I’m not going to argue that hockey is better or worse than soccer, it is nice to see just how tough and unrelenting hockey players are. Just from watching the blackhawks play in the playoffs a couple moments that stand out. One would be Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo who suffered a ruptured testicle (just typing that makes me cringe a little) in game 5 and was taken to the hospital. The Canucks were short on defensemen though and were facing elimination, so he came right back out and played the next game as best he could in immense pain.

Another that comes to mind is Duncan Keith who took a puck square in the mouth this year in the playoffs vs the Sharks. He had 7 teeth knocked out but after getting pain numbing shots came back on the ice and actually led the hawks in time played in the game. He also helped lead them back from being down 0-2 to go on to win 4-2. What makes this even more impressive to me anyway, is that these aren’t even out of the ordinary for hockey players.

2.) Nastiness

There’s just a certain nastiness and ugliness to hockey games. Of course the obvious fighting will occur which is great by itself (what other sport allows two guys to just start a quick boxing match in the middle of a game?) but in addition there’s just constant checking / shoving people after the play is over and trash talking. While I’m definitely big on sportsmanship and respecting your opponents it’s still pretty great to see two teams that really hate each other go at one another with everything they’ve got. In modern sports it seems like many athletes on opposing teams are friends off the field and fighting in all other sports is punished so harshly. It’s nice to have at least one sport where it’s an all-out war.

1.) Hockey is the fastest paced sport in the world

There’s just no comparison to any other of the major team sports out there. I don’t think I have to tell anyone that baseball is a bit slow paced. Football is extremely fast paced…for about 7 seconds at a time and then a 40second play clock ticks away while everyone catches their breath. Basketball is decent but a lot of slower paced action early in the game and the last couple minutes of basketball takes forever to play out. In hockey if you have two minutes left in a game, very often you’re going to see two minutes straight of everyone on the ice giving 100% to either get the lead or protect it. Even throughout the entire game the action is just so much more fast paced and more intense than anything else. There’s no timeouts or stoppages to change players, and if you don’t do it fast enough… too bad.

This hockey season also gave me my favorite live sporting event I’ve ever attended. I went to game 5 of the Blackhawks vs Predators series that was tied 2-2. Late in the 3rd period the Blackhawks were trailing 4-3 and with one minute left in the game Marian Hossa got a 5 minute major boarding penalty. Despite now being shorthanded the hawks were forced to pull their goalie and pray for the best. The best came with just 13 seconds left as they scored the game tying goal to send it into overtime. The only problem was they still had 4 minutes of penalty time to kill. As the minutes ticked away the crowd got louder and louder until Hossa was finally released from the penalty box and instantly scored the game winning goal inspiring this commercial

So thanks for the memories and congratulations to the 2010 Blackhawks. If you’re not watching hockey I encourage you to check out a game or two in person, maybe you’ll be hooked too

GUKPT Summer Series Final Table (Which was also the only table lol)

 Ice Hockey the Forgotten Sport

For me, the last month has been quite a whirlwind. I’ve tilted, I’ve played focused, I’ve blown big stacks, grinded small stacks, tilted because LeBron is a douche, lived at an ex-girlfriend’s house for a weekend, traveled from hotel to hotel, all while seriously contemplating what the next step in my life is going to be.

I never planned on being a poker lifer. I see the guys at my table, middle-aged, sad and lonely, waiting for their next pair of aces to try and win the rent money. Of course, this isn’t everybody who plays poker professionally. The influx of young talent has made it tough to distinguish between a poker table and the most aggressive daycare on the planet. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of a young poker superstar ending up hoping and praying for their next big pot, just like the middle-aged man they make fun of while they’re away from the tables.

ESPN does an incredible job of glamorizing the poker scene. They show the excitement of winning a race at the World Series of Poker. They show the improbable becoming possible and the ensuing jubilation of kings running down aces. They show the agony of defeat the the overwhelming joy of winning. It’s not nearly that glamorous.

For every Joe Cada or Joe Hachem, there’s an ordinary Joe, grinding his way in the $1-2 nl cash games, just trying to put food on the table for his family. To slightly lesser extents, I have been on both ends of the spectrum. I’ve gone from a $250,000 loser to a $250,000 winner in the same day. I’ve outplayed people on ESPN and I’ve grossly been outplayed on ESPN (Thank you Michael DeMichele). I’ve also grinded $5/10 and $8/16, trying to win enough to make sure my bills were paid and I had enough leftover to buy the new Madden.

The problem with experience column A is having to deal with the subsequent and generally inevitable column B. VERY few people have the mental stability to stick around at the highest stakes in the world. I would argue that there are more skilled players than a David Chiu or Barry Greenstein, but their ability to focus and stay off tilt are simply world-class. Chiu, in fact, was playing $30/60 cash games just days after winning over $1 million dollars in a WPT tournament. That, ladies and gentlemen, is discipline.

The point is, being a professional poker player is not for everybody. I feel like when I’m focused I among the best in the world, and my results have backed that up. I have over $750,000 in career online tournament cashes with an ROI over 30% since 2006. I have two WSOP circuit rings ($300 nl in 2006 for $63,000 and $500 HORSE in 2009 for $13,000) in a limited number of tournaments. I cashed 13th in the $3000 nl at the 2008 WSOP for $35,000. I finished 2nd in a $500 nl in Biloxi in 2009 for $35,000. I final tabled the $2,500 8-game event at the 2009 WSOP for $38,000. My point is – I am a damn good poker player. Now, if only that was enough.

It’s no secret among those who read this blog or are close friends of mine that the last year has been a struggle. For the most part, I’ve remained borderline-comfortable, but living this way can take its toll on anybody. My mental stability is nearly non-existent, which is in lockstep with my body’s stability. What this all boils down to is that I don’t want to wake up one day and be that middle-aged man who sits across the table, hoping to flop a set or make his flush so he can make sure his family is provided for. Oftentimes, I see this as my ghost of Christmas future. It scares the hell out of me.

In that spirit, I’m finally taking steps to rectify the problem at hand. I will undoubtedly play poker forever, but I will not be a professional poker player for much longer. I am enrolling into school this fall, moving toward a future that doesn’t resemble my present. I plan on finishing my bachelors in a year, followed by completing my masters and (if I’m feeling ambitious) eventually getting my doctorate. I want to be a college professor someday. I want to do something that makes a difference in peoples lives, rather than trying to destroy lives to fill my own pocketbooks. I want to work with people instead of against everybody I come in contact with.

If you can make a living as a professional poker player, by all means, you have my respects. There are times that it drives me crazy that I cannot comfortably do the same. That said, I imagine there will come a day when settling for the less, rather than suffering while chasing the more, will prove to be one of the best decisions of my life.

Hey guys,

Been a while since my last blog. As you probably guessed I was pretty busy playing in the WSOP, and as you probably also guessed, it didn’t go too well.

I plan on doing a full recap of the WSOP at some pt, though there is a decent chance I’ll just decide not to relive it altogether and just move on as if sidling away from a crime scene. The summer was exhausting and definitely brutal, but I can’t wait till next year.

Anyways just wanted to let you guys all know that I will still be blogging here, just that I didn’t really have any chances to during the series. I was never even on AIM or an online poker site at any point, and while I kinda liked it, I am definitely ready to make the plunge back into online poker., and WINNING.

I am heading home now and have a lot to take care of, so hopefully I’ll be settled in and back to blogging within a week or so.

Other Perhaps you didn’t realise…

Back to the internet I go...
